UPDATE (Midnight 6/23): FarmVille for iPhone is now available for download in the US iTunes store. See the announcement and our initial impressions of the portable version of the Facebook farming juggernaut.
Since Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference revealed the existence of an iPhone version of Farmville last month, we've been working hard to find out an exact date for the popular Facebook game's first official mobile release. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to pin down anything more concrete than the "late June" announced by Zynga CEO Mark Pincus at the show.
Well, apparently we can stop asking, because Zynga's official Farmville app is currently available on the New Zealand iTunes App Store. Why does New Zealand, of all places, get it first? Well, as of this writing, it's already June 24 in the land of the Kiwis, whereas it's still June 23 for most of the rest of the world.
Pocket Gamer UK says the New Zealand release implies that the game will hit the UK in the early morning hours and, presumably, other regions as morning comes around for them. Of course, if you create a new dummy New Zealand iTunes account you won't have to wait at all. But you didn't hear it from us *cough*

Quote of the Moment: "My dog is in the pound"
"My grandmother-in-law, she is 83 years old, she wears thick glasses, she has curly grey hair, she's been about four years widowed now, she lives with my mother-in-law. My mother-in-law was recently returning from a trip out of town. As soon as she got home, my grandmother-in-law comes out to the back porch to meet her, she's very upset, she's distraught.
She says, 'Well, my dog is in the pound,' and my mother-in-law says "What do you mean your dog is in the pound?" She thought for a minute she was talking about her boston terrier. And she says 'No, my dog on Farmville. My dog's been thrown in the pound! You've got to go to the store and you've got to buy farm dollars for me.' The obvious answer was to drive 20 miles, to Target, buy the card for $30 then turn around and drive back home that very night so she could get her dog out of the pound."
Leigh Fransen, of Fort Mill South Carolina recounts the lengths he family has gone to for Farmville in a very entertaining NPR piece on the appeal of social games.

FarmVille Trellis Swing & Lamp Post soon to lighten up gardens
It seems there are a few surrealists on the FarmVille design team. While we often see very regular farm items, things you'd expect to find on a farm, once in a while they throw something completely bizarre our way. A previous example of this was the pig in a hula skirt on a see-saw with two ducks. It's crazy! Now the latest surrealist FarmVille item is the Trellis Swing.
Look at it! It's a sheep and a pig, on a romantic date! At first it seemed wrong, but the more I think about it, it's starting to appear totally cute. The pig and sheep make a great couple, and clearly they like each other. It's not easy to sit on a swing and chat endlessly with someone you don't really love. Hmm, I wonder what they're talking about...

FarmVille: An autumn of magic's in store with Griffin and pals
FarmVille Griffin, Pegasus, Unicorn, Dragon, and Phoenix
When these sweet, magical critters were first leaked mid-October (with the Unicorn as last week's latecomer), players expected them to make their FarmVille debut in time for Halloween. Even though we know that there's no guarantee that unreleased items will ever hit the market, it was still a huge disappointment when that didn't happen.
But last night, FarmVille declared on its blog that "magic is in the autumn air" and that "Soon items like this Griffin will be available in the FarmVille Marketplace." So instead of Halloween, it's most likely that the Griffin, Pegasus, Unicorn, Dragon, and Phoenix will be making their appearance at the same time as the Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows (Part 1) movie, which will premiere internationally on November 18th, and in US theaters on November 19th.

FarmVille Free Farm Cash Round-up: Get 6 Farm Cash from Intel, McDonald's & Bing
Who wants some free Farm Cash? I know I wouldn't mind boosting my spending power in FarmVille this holiday season, what with all of the great winter holiday themed items being released. If you want some free Farm Cash for yourself, take a look at three new promotions that have now begun circulating around users' farms. Each offers just 2 Farm Cash, but when combined, that 6 Farm Cash will do well to help you buy yourself (or your friends) a little something this holiday.
The first is from Intel, and it asks you to take the "Intel Computer Personality Quiz." You'll do by clicking on the Sponsored Link at the bottom right corner of the FarmVille game page which will load a new window, where you'll answer a series of personality questions, about computers of course, until you are told that you earned your free Farm Cash in the top right corner of this new window.
The second new promotion is from McDonald's. Following the same procedure, this promotion, when clicked, loads a new window where you'll answer a quick poll, and will receive your Farm Cash in the same way as above - just keep an eye out for the phrase stating that you've earned your Farm Cash, and you can close the window at any time thereafter.
Finally, Bing is at it again, offering another promotion giving users 2 Farm Cash for participating. This promotion is a bit more complex, as it asks you to play the Word Challenge at Club Bing in order to earn your free Farm Cash. Please note that this promotion is different from the ones we saw released in July and November of this year.
As these Farm Cash promotions tend to appear and then disappear at random (and rather quickly at that), it's possible (nay, likely) that you won't see these particular promotions the next time you log into the game. However, with enough refreshes, or perhaps a bit of luck, they are sure to cycle around to your farm in time, allowing you cash in on some free Farm Cash.
Regardless of the promotion you click on, remember that your Farm Cash will automatically be added to your in-game total, it will NOT go to your Gift Box. Simply refresh the page after each promotion and you will see your updated (read: larger) Farm Cash total.

FarmVille Winter Holiday items: Candy Cane Chicken, Winter Castle, Reindeer Balloon & More
If you check out the "Specials" tab of the FarmVille marketplace, you'll see that the middle image has now been transformed to say "Last Chance!" on "Winter Holiday Items!" However, the fact that the Christmas holiday is now just days away hasn't stopped Zynga from adding even more items to this quickly expiring theme.
Tonight's FarmVille update sees the release of a new animal, a new (and very large) building, along with five new decorative items in the game's store. Luckily, the majority of the decorative items are available for coins, so if you've got any extra space on your farm to hold them, be sure to check out all of the details about these new items with us behind the break.
First, the new animal is one that we gave you a Sneak Peek of a few days ago. It is the Candy Cane Chicken, and it is available to purchase for 25 Farm Cash. Candy Cane Chickens, when placed into a Chicken Coop, have a chance of laying a treasured Candy Cane Mystery Egg, which can then be shared with your friends via a generic wall post. As for your own farm, the chicken can be harvested from once per day and will give you 64 coins in the process. The chicken will be available for the next 9 days.
Moving on, the new building is the Winter Castle, another item that we gave you a Sneak Peek of earlier this week. It is available for 42 Farm Cash. You'll receive 4200 experience points as a reward for purchasing it, and if you'd like to sell it once the holiday season is over, you'll receive 21,000 coins in return. That's not very much, so maybe you'd try storing it instead? I know I would.
As for the decorations, four out of the five new items go for coins. The one premium item is the Reindeer Gnome. Gnome collectors better have their in-game wallets ready, as the Gnome will cost 12 Farm Cash to add to your collection. However, if you're willing to make the splurge, you'll receive 1200 experience points as a reward for doing so.
The other four items are the Chilipepper Lights, the Lighted Saguaro cactus, the Reindeer Balloon, and the Stocking Planter, which cost 10,000, 30,000, 50,000, and 5,000 coins, respectively. You'll receive 10% of the purchase price as a reward in experience points (100 for the Lights, 300 for the cactus, 500 for the balloon, and 50 for the planter). It should be noted that the Reindeer Balloon is yet another large item to be released in this theme. The base itself isn't large, but the balloon portion is, so it will probably block your view of whatever sits near it / behind it.
And there you have it! Presumably the final addition of Winter Holiday items in FarmVille for the year, which will be available for the next nine days. We'll be sure to let you know if Zynga adds any other decorative items to the game, but until then, happy holidays!

Is PopCap's Bejeweled Blitz beating FarmVille where it counts?
According to PopCap VP of social operations Michael Carpenter, Bejeweled Blitz is the number one game on Facebook--just look at the numbers differently. In an editorial on Gamesindustry.biz, Carpenter goes into detail explaining how the success of social games should be measured. You see, Facebook games' popularity and reach are measured in two ways: monthly active users (MAU) and daily active users (DAU).
We all know CityVille surpassed what many thought might be impossible with over 100 million MAU. Yet just as quickly as it rose to the top, it's now began its descent just like Zynga's FarmVille did nearly one year ago. Carpenter doesn't address this, but rather makes his point that DAU is more important than MAU because, "A high DAU/MAU percentage means that players are actively engaged in a game, often returning several times a day to play," Carpenter said.
While PopCap, like everyone else, is beat by Zynga when it comes to reach, Bejeweled Blitz has a higher DAU/MAU percentage than any of Zynga's games. The DAU/MAU percentage is essentially the percentage of a game's total monthly active users that are also daily active users. An impressive 34 percent of Bejeweled Blitz's monthly players log in daily compared to just 26 percent of FarmVille's 54 million MAU. We're no mathematicians, but isn't 26 percent of 54 million still more than 34 percent of the 11.4 million monthly Bejeweled Blitz players? Yes, it's way more.
It's certainly an impressive feat for PopCap to keep over a third of its audience so dedicated no matter how you slice it. But Carpenter even admitted, "In a nutshell, while Bejeweled Blitz does not have as many players, it's doing a good job of retaining those it has." Most importantly, keep in mind that this is far from the first time the company has downright lashed out at Zynga for whatever reason. Now, cut the bickering and get back to making my dream of Peggle for Facebook come true.

The Valentine's Day events in FarmVille are far from over, if FarmVille Freak's recent findings turn out to be true. (Which they usually are.) The blog has found three icons that simply read, "FarmVille Unreleased Valentine Themed Quest" 1, 2 and 3. If we can gather anything from these quest icons, it's that they will involve stuffed animals, chocolates, flower, a pig and, oddly enough, a hot-air balloon. In other words, standard fair for what many call "National Single-Awareness Day."

FarmVille Freak also found two new trees to grow this Valentine's Day, the Candy Heart Tree and the Cinnamon Heart Tree. DucklingThe Duck Pond in FarmVille is about to become much, much more useful. FarmVille Freak has found images of a new menu that will likely be part of the new Duck Pond structure in the game. The blog guesses that Ducklings, a new animal likely to be released in FarmVille if this feature makes it in the game, will be harvested from the Duck Pond.
The image implies that we'll need the help of seven neighbors to help raise the Ducklings within a time limit. Another image suggests that exactly what adult Duck the Ducklings grow into will be a mystery. As goes with all unreleased content, there is no guarantee that this will be released. But when the current Duck Pond sometimes reads "Ducklings are coming!" after a harvest, chances are more than likely.

FarmVille: Be a Princess without a crown with new avatar dress
It seems as though Zynga might have forgotten to release a FarmVille avatar clothing item in the Fairy Tale theme last Sunday, as a new dress for girl avatars has silently appeared in the game. This item is almost identical to the Princess costume released before, but where that costume came with not only a dress and shoes, but also a tiara, this "Princess Dress" is just that - the pink dress with a nice pair of shoes.
There is a slight color difference in the bodice of these two dresses, with the solitary dress being more of an orange-shade, and you'll pay a heck of a lot less if you go for the no-crown option, as this Princess Dress costs just 30,000 coins. For the record, the Princess costume costs 100,000 coins.
It's still interesting to see that only one avatar clothing item has been released strictly for male characters (that being the Knight costume), but we'll make sure to let you know if that changes in the future. In the meantime, you have two weeks to purchase this new solo dress, while the Princess costume will leave the game in ten days.

Rumor has it that new animals will be coming to this week's Mystery Game, but whether or not this will be included remains to be seen. The Black Beauty could also possibly be released as a general addition to the game's store, as we doubt it would fit in with the current limited edition Fairy Tale theme of items. With the amount of free FarmVille Farm Cash flying around, it's a wonder folks are still buying the stuff. Well, considering Zynga is worth between $9 and $10 billion, maybe not so much. FarmVille Feed has found yet another Sponsored Link beneath the FarmVille game screen through Inuit, a suite of web and mobile apps for small businesses. It's slowly being rolled out to players, so don't be alarmed if you can't see this one yet. Just click on the link beneath your game screen that reads, "Build your Intuit Websites company story with the name generator to get cash."
After clicking the link, a pop-up will appear with a series of fields to put information into. Fill out the form, detailing your dream business, and click "Next." From there, simply read the generated story and check out the website that Inuit created for your dream business. Along the way, you should see a message in the upper right corner of the window informing you that you've earned your Farm Cash. With that, it's OK to close the window and the sweet cash should post to your account shortly after.

With FarmVille English Countryside--an expansion that appears to improve on the original in almost every way--on the horizon, is there any reason to go back? Sure, Zynga will update the original FarmVille alongside the new, but whether it's worth it to upkeep two farms at once is up for debate. Especially considering the disparity in quality that will show itself. So, we ask you, loyal readers:

FarmVille English Countryside launches today, slowly rolling-out
Today is the day we start all over again in a new land: England. The FarmVille English Countryside expansion is launching today in a slow roll-out to players everywhere. According to FarmVille Freak, several farmers have reported gaining access to the new game upon logging into FarmVille. Of course, you'll need to be Level 20 for Duke's Airship to crash land on your farm, but we imagine a good lot of you are well past that milestone. If not, check out our guide on how to make that happen, like, now. Even if you're Level 100 or higher and don't see Duke yet, don't worry. Your time will come. Until then, request those Special Delivery Boxes from your friends like mad if you haven't already and play your favorite game--The Waiting Game, of course.

Earn 2 free FarmVille Farm Cash in Hoodwinked 2 promotion
A new FarmVille Farm Cash promotion has appeared underneath many players' game screens in association with Hoodwinked 2: The Really Imaginary Sequel (working title). FarmVille Freak found the new Sponsored Link, which has yet to appear under my game. Regardless, this promotion is business as usual: Just click on the link with the Hoodwinked logo to get started.
Clicking the link will take you to an interactive pop-up ad. A promotional video for the Hoodwinked sequel will play on the left side of the screen. (Seriously, this flick gets a sequel and we're still waiting for Finding Nemo 2?) From there, a simple series of questions will appear to the right--answer them and your notification that you've earned your Farm Cash will appear in the upper right corner of the window. When you see this, it's time to close the window, give it about an hour and refresh your game to see if the Farm Cash posted to your account.

Official FarmVille Podcast (04/25/2011): Rotate animal buildings, store more bushels
In this week's official FarmVille Podcast, FarmVille Community Manager Lexilicious was on-hand to give us a sneak peek of some coming attractions to the game. First, animal collectors will be very happy to learn that rotation will soon be added to many of the game's animal storage buildings including the Chicken Coop, Dairy Barn, Pig Pen, Turkey Roost, Duck Pond, and Animal Trough.
In another future update, we'll be able to expand the amount of crop Bushels we can hold on our farms simply by adding more Market Stalls to our land. The ratio will be 25 new Bushels added to your maximum capacity for every one Market Stall you add to your land, after your first Market Stall (which can be thought of as providing the current 100 slots).
All in all, this wasn't a very informative podcast, but we're definitely happy with the coming ability to rotate our animal buildings, so giving the full podcast a listen definitely wasn't a waste of time.

Zynga warns against scammers with a giant flashing cupcake [Video]
You heard that right - flashing cupcakes! What's better than a cupcake? A cupcake filled with a flashing marquee, that's what! Ok, so I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. This cupcake, along with some words of warning, comes to us from the folks at Zynga, as the company has released a new video detailing the many fake or otherwise fraudulent accounts and websites that will try and steal your Facebook information, your billing information, or even your Farm Cash and other premium currency in its games.
It warns against the users that have started posing as members of Zynga's security team, and offers some tips to avoid falling victim to various phishing scams. While these tips are basic, they outline never entering your Facebook password on a third party site, even if it looks like its run by Zynga, Facebook or both, and to never click on something that looks "too good to be true," even if it the request looks to come from a friend. There's also the reminder that we should never accept a free premium cash offer (like one for free Farm Cash in FarmVille or free Cafe Cash in Cafe World) via a third party, as they simply don't have the authority to do so.
Again, these tips are fairly self-explanatory, but they do come wrapped in a clever package (did I mention there's a flashing cupcake?), and are worth giving at least a single look via the video here, even if only for the clever animated characters ripped straight from Zynga's many games on Facebook.

FarmVille Pic of the Day: Shammie 77's mountaintop kingdom
Today I've got a real treat for you fine folks: Shammie 77's mountain farm. It's farms like these that reinforce my belief that FarmVille designing is an art. Sure I've labeled some questionable farms as art in my time, but you have to agree that Shammie 77's design is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Shammie's farm does so many things right. The idea for the design itself is excellent, a fortress on a hill, with a small village at the bottom. The design is kept simple, featuring only the items that were absolutely necessary. This gives the whole thing a very clean look. Of course, the optical illuison is really excellent. Where other farmers tend to overdo or exagerate their FarmVille design illusions, Shammie includes it nonchalantly, giving the farm a really natural and convincing appearance. In addition, Shammie 77 smartly connects the areas together with paths and a river, furthering the optical illusion.
I could go on and on about everything that makes this farm so great, but instead I'm going to give you a chance to look it over by clicking the image above. This creation reportedly took Shammie 77 several weeks to make, so take your time checking it out.

FarmVille Halloween items: Candy Corn Tree, Halloween Cottage, Jack-O'-Lantern and more
With tonight's FarmVille update, we see the game switch to Halloween-mode, as the first set of Halloween related items has been released in the store. This particular update sees the launch of both new items and old, so if you happen to regret not purchasing some items from last year's Halloween theme, take a look at our overview of these items to see if they've come back around.
Crops
Jack O Lantern - 10 Farm Cash
To be specific, the Jack O Lantern crop comes as an exclusive, permit-only crop that can be unlocked for 10 Farm Cash. For that price, you'll gain access to planting the crop as many times as you'd like for a seven day period. Once purchased and planted, you'll be able to harvest the Jack O Lanterns after 12 hours, and will gain three experience points for each and every square planted. The crop is masterable, with the first star coming at 400 harvests.
Trees
Candy Corn Tree - 8 Farm Cash
Giant Candy Corn Tree - 14 Farm Cash
Halloween Candy Tree - 8 Farm Cash
Big Halloween Candy Tree - 14 Farm Cash
If you're like me, the thought of bright and whimsical trees will likely have you ready to whip out your credit card. These trees are no exception, as the Halloween Candy trees keep their purple color constantly, while the Candy Corn trees start out in different shades of green, only to mature into the classic white, yellow and orange trio of colors we're familiar with from the candy. As usual, the Level 1 (cheaper) trees are the only ones you really need to worry about purchasing outright for your collection, as you'll likely earn the larger trees in each pair for free via Mystery Seedlings.
Animals
Candy Corn Cat - 12 Farm Cash
Candy Corn Pony - 24 Farm Cash
Candy Corn Unicorn - 30 Farm Cash
Candy Corn Stallion - 35 Farm Cash
For these animals, the Candy Corn Pony was released last year (also for 24 Farm Cash), so you might already have one on your farm. If you'd like to purchase these items for your new Lighthouse Cove farm, however, you will have to purchase multiples (duplicates) as there is no way to transfer storage to your new farm as of this writing.
Buildings
Halloween Cottage - 30 Farm Cash
Candy Corn Home - 18 Farm Cash
The Halloween Cottage has to be one of the most intricately detailed buildings I've seen released in FarmVille in quite some time, if not ever. The building is covered in various spiderwebs and has candy, pumpkins and what appear to be twigs resting in the windowsills, around the front "porch" and the sides. Even the weather vane on the roof is in the design of the bat - how neat! As for the Candy Corn Home, it takes on a cuter appearance, with smaller candy corn pieces branching off from the main home as separate rooms. It's just a shame that both of these items cost Farm Cash, rather than going for coins.
Decorations
Candy Corn Gate - 10,000 coins
Candy Corn (Fountain) - 15 Farm Cash
Jack-O'-Lantern - 3,000 coins
Candy Corn Gnome - 15 Farm Cash
Candy Corn Fence - 5,000 coins

While I'm fairly confident additional costumes will be launched in the game's store between now and Halloween proper, if you're looking to get into the spirit early, or just really like Bananas or Candy Corn, you can spend a few Farm Cash to dress your avatar up appropriately. Remember, you can try on items to see if you like the way your avatar looks in them before purchasing.
All of these items (with the exception of the crop) will be available in the game for the next 13 days. To top all of this off, however, if you happen to purchase seven items in this theme so far within the next seven days, you'll receive a free Nightmare Rider: a Halloween-themed sheep with a pumpkin hat and an orange and black flame motorcycle. We'll make sure to let you know when additional Halloween items and features launch in the game in the coming weeks, so keep checking back with us!
